Carter is an extremely prolific fine art photographer who works out of his home in Beaumont, TX. Carter has released 10 books over the course of his career beginning with From Uncertain to Blue which documented small Texas towns in the late 1980’s.
Ghostland culminates a darker period of Keith’s career being produced during the illness of his wife of 40 years, Patricia. During the time she was ill, Carter changed his working style to accommodate being at home with her. He began experimenting with a hybrid combination of digital and collodion wet-plate processes which yielded an amazing body of experimental and progressive work in a traditional medium.
Carter’s work embraces traditional elements and subjects interpreted with a sense of mysticism and folklore as he draws from his Texas roots. In recent years he began experimenting with abstract forms using physical and chemical methods to “damage” his negatives as a metaphor for his own struggle with eye cancer.
